Highland Park

Although Highland Park was never a separate city, it wasn't annexed until the the 1950s.

The area was a suburb of the city and didn't become part of Topeka until 1957. The only Topekan to reach the moon, Ron Evans, was raised in Topeka's Highland Park neighborhood.

Perhaps the most important landmark in the area is Popenoe House, which now serves as the rectory for Saint Matthew's Church. Popenoe, who was the publisher of the Topeka Daily Capital, lived in the Tudor mansion.

Highland Park was established as a suburb in the 1880s by Joseph Hudson, who was publisher of the newspaper before Popenoe reached the same position.

The area includes a small portion the city's southeast quadrant and is served by the Topeka Public Schools and Highland Park High School. The region is also home to the Topeka Genealogical Society Library and Lakewood Park.
